To play a gangster, you have to be a gangster.
As any aspiring actor will tell you, being cast is the hardest part of getting work in show biz. Even for John Travolta sometimes.
Before he played his iconic role in “Pulp Fiction,” Travolta’s career was on a downswing…
Director of the film, Quentin Tarantino, had a different actor in mind for the part of Vincent Vega.
But Tarantino was a life-long Travolta fan and agreed to meet with him.
When the two met, John took it upon himself to ask the hard questions. He brought up money to the young director who — to no one’s surprise — hadn’t considered those logistics.
The filmmaker was so impressed with John Travolta’s persistent questioning that he could see him playing Vincent in “Pulp Fiction.” Quentin could finally see his “philosophical gangster” quality.
After Travolta portrayed the character, he became the highest paid actor in Hollywood for many years.
But in the end, John had to fight for the title and show he had the chops to bring Tarantino’s vision to life. It goes to show that no matter how big a superstar you are, being business-savvy and having negotiation skills matter.
